Bad Breath Sinus Problems
A sinus infection can cause bad breath due to sinus
congestion within the nasal cavities.
With bad breath, sinus infections can be a part of the problem. When the infections take hold,
they have bacteria that give off a bad odor.
Sinusitis Bad Breath
There are many causes of bad breath. Sinus infections can be just one of those reasons. The
reasons behind a person’s bad breath include the following:
Dental disease, including periodontal disease can cause bad breath. Brushing and flossing daily will
help prevent some of these problems. Plaque can form on your teeth that can cause gingivitis. Bacteria
building up in the mouth can release hydrogen sulfide, the same chemical that causes rotten egg smell.
Your tongue can also build up bacteria, causing bad breath. Even dentures can cause a bad odor if not
Certain cancers and metabolic disorders are the cause of bad breath. They usually create specific odors
that are from the chemicals produced by the cancer or metabolic disease. Diabetes, liver or kidney
disease can yield a fishy odor to the breath. Uncontrolled diabetes can yield a fruity smell to the
breath. GERD or gastroesophageal disease can cause bad odors coming from the stomach.
Another cause of bad breath, sinus and nasal conditions can cause sinus odor that passes through the
mouth and can cause bad breath odor. This is often referref to as sinus bad breath. If there is
postnasal drip, it can cause bad odor to permeate the mouth. Small stones in the tonsils can lead to
bad breath because they are covered with bacteria. These are called tonsillar crypt debris.
Fortunately, there is treatment for a person’s bad breath and the treatment depends on the cause
of the halitosis or bad breath. If it is caused by an underlying medical condition, you need to treat the condition
first so the bad breath goes away. You also can use dental treatments, such as dental rinses, toothpastes and mouth
wash that can get rid of the odor.
You can have the crypt debris removed from the tonsils. The dental rinses can kill bad bacteria
and can clean the mouth out. Most contain chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride that prevents bacteria from
causing odors. You may need to see a gum specialist to treat periodontal disease.
If the bad breath is caused by sinus disease, the bacteria need to be taken care of. This can
mean taking care of the sinusitis by using antibiotics.
Antibiotics commonly used in sinus infections include penicillins, cephalosporins, Bactrim,
quinolone antibiotics and erythromycin antibiotics. These can kill off the sinus infection and can take away the
Prevention of Bad Breath
You need to take care of the cause of the bad breath before you actually get the problem. This
means regular brushing of teeth, at least two times per day. It also means using dental rinses that kill bacteria
and brushing your tongue at least once a day. They make tongue scrapers that get rid of bacteria from the
If you have allergies, you need to treat the allergies before they turn into a sinus infection.
When it becomes a sinus infection, the odor usually takes over and causes bad breath. Preventing the allergies form
building up mucus in the first place so that the mucus can’t become infected.
If you have Bad Breath from Sinus
If your bad breath is due to sinus disease or sinus infections, you can do several things to
help control the problem. One of them is to use a Neti pot. A Neti pot is a small pot that looks like a tea kettle.
It has a long spigot that dispenses warm saline solution into the nostril.
The solution travels through the nasal passages and comes out the bottom nostril with mucus and
The Neti pot can clear out the malodorous bad breath. Sinus conditions are kept in check so that
the bad odor is easily controlled and the infection has a better chance of going away.
